Self 101 – Step 5… Ask the Tough Questions!

The ones you never ask.

Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door shall be opened.

- Matthew 7:7

What do you ask?  Well, not just the easy ones like, which shoes am I wearing today or whether you’re going to “like” someone on Facebook…  We’re talking about the tough questions; the ones  you’d rather not face.  The ones where the answers (especially the true answers) may be scarier than life the way it is right now.

Who am I?

What am I?

Why am I here?

What am I supposed to be “doing” with my life?

What makes my heart sing?

How do I live a life of joy and fulfillment?

Why am I searching… and what am I searching for?

What’s my connection with everyone else?

What’s the meaning of life?

What’s the meaning of love?… of fear?

Whether you realize it or not, you’re asking these questions all the time.  But the questioning voice is soft, and timid, and very unsure of itself… and not at all confident that it’ll be ready for the answers.

You get ready for the answers by facing the fear of them.  By accepting that it will be uncomfortable hearing and looking at them… at least at first.

It’s all scary… until it’s not.

These questions and many others you may think of are vital to you becoming who you are.  Without them, and the unblinking truth of the answers, you just go on living the shadow of your real life.

And you’re past that point in your life where that’s OK… right?

See?  You’re already answering the tough questions!  Way to go!… now keep going.

“The key to the universe lies dormant within the self, waiting to awaken through self-discovery”

Taejoon Lee

You.

Yeah, you.  Not the frantic, fearful, phony you that needs to analyze and dissect everything, but the YOU that represents a calmer, gentler, more “knowing” essence of who you really are.  That place in you that comes up with information sometimes seemingly out of the blue, when you least expect it.   You’ve experienced moments of instinct, intuition, hunches, “gut” feelings where you just seem to be presented with what you need to know at the time… right?

This is where you need to go to have a chat with yourSelf more often.  So Step 4 of the Self 101 course is…

Tune into and connect with the real you… the higher you.

After all… if you’ve gotten all cozy and quiet (See Step 3), why not take advantage of the opportunity to talk and listen to a completely rational, very wise, and lovingly honest character that only has your best interest at heart?

Who is this “higher” you?

Some people liken it to that unspoiled, untrained, unprogrammed, and fearless part of you that doesn’t know… that it’s possible not to know.  Others call it the Universe, Source, Essence, Creator, or God (in all of its permutations).  It really doesn’t matter what you call it… as long as you call on it.  On a sub-atomic level we’re all made of the same “stuff”; in fact, we’re made of the same stuff as everything in this universe.  There’s something… some force or energy or intelligence that’s in between all the particles that make up matter, that cause everything to take the form that it takes.  So a toothpick, battleship, galaxy of stars… and you… are essentially created in the same way, except for intention.

And it’s this intention that we intend to connect with!

So if you’re at least open to listening to and being guided by something that may know a little more than that crazy brain/ego/false-self you’ve been dealing with for so long (and look where that’s gotten you!), then you should be ready to give this a try.

It’s not hard, and you’ve got nothing to fear.  Once the introduction is made… and I’d be happy to do that for you… you’ll come to love your new friend like a long-lost family member, and that’s exactly who it is.  There’s no one closer to you… then You.

You… know best.

Sit still and be quiet.

Stop whining, you big babies!  If I haven’t said this before, this simple course is very simple… it’s just not very easy!

But it wasn’t easy getting to where you are right now.  Wherever that is, chances are you’re not completely thrilled with it (see Step 1).  And at this point you may be ready to accept at least a little responsibility for the circumstances in your life (see Step 2).

So pipe down, and stay that way for a few minutes.  When you do this, you’ll put yourself in a very rarefied portion of our western world population… there’s  probably less than 2 percent of us that purposely (and purposefully) shut down their eyes, ears and brains for a period of time other than sleeping.

Call it what you want… sometimes I call it “Me-time”.  Others use words like meditation, contemplation, prayer, reflection, introspection, day-dreaming, zoning out, just “being”… claim you’re goofing-off if you like, but just do it.

Why do this silly, simple and ridiculously easy thing when you could be doing something more important?  Let me address the “easy” part first… 98% of us don’t do this seemingly easy thing because it’s much easier… not to do it.  It’s not easy.  ‘Try it for 5 minutes and report back to me.  Oh, and also, we don’t think it has any value.  So what have I got to lose by skipping this time-waster so I can watch the 6 o’clock news?  I’ve got to stay up on things, don’t I?!

I don’t know…  But I do know what you can potentially lose.  How about, for starters – Health, happiness, peace of mind, better relationships, stressless living and a life of purpose and fulfillment?

You can look it up.  There’ve been countless studies conducted by the most brilliant and pedigreed organizations of scientists, academics, religious leaders and just plain old curious folks… all pointing to the simple conclusion that practicing one or more of those odd words above can change your life.

It can change… your life.

So what have you got to lose?  Just the life that you want to change… you’re ready to change… you’re responsible for changing.  That’s all.

You will feel better – do better – be better… Isn’t that enough?

Stay focused… one step at a time… see you in Step 4.
